THE ROUNDUP
Brophy’s experienced track and field team has kicked off the 2011 track season
with early meets and competitions against solid opposing teams.
The track team is coming off a solid fourth place finish in the state championship meet last season, which resulted in an invite to Nike Track Nationals for a selected group of athletes.
This season, the team was tested early against Corona Del Sol who defeated the Broncos 72-68. Next, they competed two days later, March 4, in the Toro Invitational at Mesa Mountain View.
In the Toro Invite, the Broncos got fourth place out of eight teams. Will Firth ’11 won first place in the boys 3200-meter run.
“The team total point results of these meets do not indicate how we will do this season,” said head coach Mr. Bill Kalkman. “We expect to be one of the top five teams in the state.”
Kalkman was referring to losses to Corona and Red Mountain, who defeated Brophy a week later March 9.
In the Toro Invite, the Broncos got fourth place out of eight teams. Will Firth ’11 won first place in the boys 3200-meter run.
On March 11, Brophy hosted the AMDG Invitational at the Brophy Sports Complex. The Broncos finished first out of six teams in the decathlon (10 total events).
Individual winners at the invitational were Firth in the 1600-meter, Tommy
Williams ’11 in the 800-meter, Devon Allen ’13 in the 100-meter and 400-meter, James Harper ’12 in the high jump and Mark Schillinger ’12 in the high jump.
“Firth is looking very strong in the distance events, Allen keeps getting faster every race,” Williams said. “There’s an overwhelming amount of depth on the team this year.”
April will be a busy month for the track and field squad with numerous meets and invitationals, including the Queen Creek Invite and the Tribune Invite at Mesa Westwood High School.
The Broncos will send their top athletes to Arcadia, Calif. for the Arcadia Invitational on April 8 and 9.
