Yet again the Broncos found themselves down at halftime Friday, Jan. 13 this time against the Mountain View Toros at Robson Gymnasium.
However, the Toros survived the late rally to snap a four-game win streak and hand Brophy’s first home loss this season 50-41.
“We missed easy shots, missed free throws, hustle plays, toughness plays, get offensive rebounds and we’d hurry it back up,” said head coach Mr. Tony Fuller.
The Broncos found themselves behind early in the first quarter as the Toros went on a 10-0 scoring run that contributed to a Mountain View 15-6 lead at the end of the period.
The Broncos missed 10 shots in the quarter while Mountain View only missed three.
In the second quarter, Brophy doubled its amount of points in the first quarter with 12. Jordan Medl ’12 led the quarter for the Broncos with six points.
However, Mountain View put up 13 points in the second as the Toros went into the locker room at halftime up 28-18.
The Toros and Broncos both scored single digits in the third quarter, but the Toros’ nine points were two more than Brophy’s seven to maintain a 37-25 lead.
Brophy missed nine shots and shot 3/7 on free throws in the quarter.
In the fourth, the Broncos began their late comeback with a 10-2 run led by six points from Robert Relf ’13, which forced Mountain View to take a timeout with 4:39 left and a 39-35 lead.
After a forced turnover by the Toros, Medl hit a jump shot that closed the gap to 42-39 Mountain View with 1:10 left.
However, the Broncos only scored two more points the rest of the game as the Toros scored eight to close with a 50-41 victory.
Medl led the Broncos with 12 points. Relf led the Brophy bench with nine points and Tim Kempton ’13 added eight points of his own.
The Broncos shot 10/17 on free throw attempts.
“We have to do a better job of accepting the physicality of the game against teams like that,” Mr. Fuller said of the height of Mountain View.
Mr. Fuller said the Broncos are not known as a comeback team.
“No. We are just a team trying to be the best we can,” he said.
The Broncos’ overall record dropped to 15-4 and 7-2 in their division. With the loss, the Broncos overall win streak stops at four, divisional-opponent win streak stop at seven and home win streak stop at three.
The Broncos’ next game is Tuesday, Jan. 17 at Robson Gymnasium against Westwind Prep Academy. The Broncos defeated Westwind 71-55 Dec. 2 earlier in the season.
