Sai Tummala ’11 and Chris Pierre ’11 led the Brophy Broncos with a combined 33 points as they defeated the Gilbert Tigers 49-38 Tuesday, Dec. 1.

Tummala ended with 17 points and 12 rebounds. He also went 10 for 11 on free throws.

Pierre finished with 16 points and three rebounds. He only missed three of his 11 free throws in the game.

The Broncos led the game 18-9 at halftime with Tummala amassing six rebounds and four points and Pierre led all scorers with seven points in the first half.

In the first half baskets were hard to come by, but the second half consisted of a whopping combined 60 points.

The Gilbert Tigers, behind seniors Shawn King and Austin James, outscored the Broncos 16-11 in the third quarter. Three-pointers started falling for King and James and the Tigers were within four going into the fourth quarter.

“They kicked us around pretty good there in the third quarter, we needed to hit some shots and move the ball a little better, take the ball to the bucket,” said Brophy coach Mr. Tony Fuller.

In the fourth quarter Gilbert quickly snagged a basket to bring them within two points, cutting what once was a ten point lead into a mere basket lead.

But a Jordan Medl ’12-to-Pierre backdoor layup and a quick three-pointer by Tummala shifted the momentum back to the Broncos.

The Broncos ended up outscoring the Tigers 20-13 in the fourth quarter to hold on to an 11 point win.

“We’re a little quicker than them—we could get by them off the dribble,” Mr. Fuller said. “We did that, they fouled us and we made our free throws. That was the difference in the game.”

Gilbert’s King and James each had 14 points by game’s end.
