THE ROUNDUP

A year after the Broncos finished 8th overall in the state championship, Anthony Hendricks ’19 said the current team’s depth and consistency may catapult them to succeed at the State Title in late October.

The yearly Brophy Invitational Tournament at Greyhawk Golf Course in Scottsdale kicked off the 2017 Season with a win for the Broncos by a margin of nine strokes.

This might just be the headway the Broncos need to gain steam for the season.

Hendricks received individual honors for his performance in the first event.

Head Coach Mr. John Shores said some of the biggest competitors this year will be Desert Mountain, their usual rival Hamilton, and said to watch out for Chaparral, as their team is filled with experienced juniors and seniors.

Although the team lost nine seniors from last year, many of the team’s key contributors are returning.

With these strong players and the cohesiveness of this year’s group, there are hopes that the team’s six year championship drought will come to an end in the near future.

“We have so many good players on this year’s team and while each player wants to improve their individual game, we want the team to grow as a whole,” Hendricks said.

Jackson Vickers ’19 said that improving his putting and consistency will be a goal for himself in order to help the team overall.

As the season progresses, the Broncos will have plenty of time to build on the momentum of their triumphant start.

“This is a group of guys that really encourage and support one another,” Mr. Shores said. “They are a nice group of guys who seem to really care about each other. They’re all really talented and they will push one another to get better.”

“We just have to take it one tournament at a time, one shot at a time, and I think that will do the trick,” Hendricks said.
