The Brophy hockey team went from a possible sixth seed in the playoffs to a third seed with a convincing 9-3 over the Boulder Creek Jaguars March 12.

The win puts the Broncos overall record at 13-7-2, which qualifies them for a first round playoff matchup against the sixth seeded Horizon Huskies.

“We are completely ready for the playoffs next week,” said Michael Weinberger ’10, the team captain.

“We have everything we need to be prepared. Most importantly, we have to play smart and hard against teams in the postseason, and I think we will,” Weinberger added.

Heading out onto the rink, the Broncos faced the Jaguars two previous times winning both games 6-4 and 9-2.

However, during the first period at 3:11, the Jaguars scored the first goal of the game to get the 1-0 lead.

It only took Brophy a couple minutes to score a goal from Weinberger with an assist from James Moeller ’12 to tie at the end of the first.

In the second period with 11:23 left, Tommy Tuohy ’10 shot a goal with an assist from Austin Hale ’11 to give the Broncos the 2-1 lead.

Four minutes later, John Carkeek ’12 connected on an unassisted goal to increase the lead to 3-1.

Boulder Creek stayed with the Broncos by scoring their second goal with 4:44 left in the second. The Brophy lead was 3-2 heading into the final period.

Within two minutes, Weinberger hit his second goal, this time unassisted to bring the score to 4-2.

The Jaguars continued to battle scoring their third team goal with 10:06 left, lowering the deficit to 4-3.

The Bronco skaters took off after that scoring five unanswered goals to grab the 9-3 victory.

The contributors on the five goals were Weinberger with two, Tomas Abrate ’10 with a goal and Eddie Prchal ’11 and Ryan Henry ’12 with a goal each.

Brophy had nine goals on six assists, 39 shots on goal and more penalty minutes than the Jaguars at 14. Boulder Creek had three goals on three assists, four total penalty minutes and 33 shots on goal.

Brophy goalie Nicholas Oleson ’11 and the Boulder Creek goalie each had 30 saves.

The Broncos will take on the Huskies in the first round of the playoffs, March 21.
