Brophy sophomore Jordan Medl ’12 had his highest scoring game of the season with nine points Jan. 22 and helped the Broncos defeat Desert Vista during the annual “Hoopcoming” game.
The game went back and forth throughout the first half. However, showings from Medl ’12 and once again Sai Tummala ’11, along with the big Bronco crowd, were too much for the Thunder to handle as Brophy won 49-38.
The Broncos and Thunder combined for four lead changes in the first half.
Brophy found themselves leading 18-17 at the end of the first period. Michael Brennan ’10 led the team with six first quarter points.
In the second quarter, the Brophy defense held Desert Vista to five points. The Broncos scored eight points to strengthen their lead going into halftime.
The scoreboard at the half showed Brophy leading 26-22.
The third quarter emerged with a slam dunk from Tummala ’11. The rest of the eight minutes belonged to the Brophy defense who held the Thunder to five points for the second quarter in a row.
The Broncos started to pull farther away leading 40-27 at the end of the third period.
The rest of the game fell into Brophy’s hands as they finished the quarter with a 9-11 scoring run.
Medl ’12 had his best game all season with nine points and two rebounds along with a defensive steal. Tummala ’11 also had nine points with two blocks and 10 rebounds.
“Tonight I felt like stepping up and playing with energy,” Medl ’12 said. “I did what I could to help my team by playing my inside game of rebounding and scoring.”
Coach Mr. Tony Fuller said he is very happy to see his young sophomore progress in the game.
“Jordan is a coach’s dream,” Mr. Fuller said.
“He works hard every day in practice. The season started out tough for him, but things are beginning to fall into place for him.”
Mr. Fuller continued with some thoughts for their next game at Chandler Jan. 26.
“We have to be mentally tough and prepared for a physical 32 (minute) war. It is going to be a fun one to watch.”
