Coming into the baseball game Feb. 26, the Corona Aztecs were the defending 5A-1 State Champions, but after seven innings, the Broncos handed them their first loss since last April.

Junior pitcher Sean Maxon ’11 threw a complete game only giving up three hits and two walks on 83 pitches.

Besides those base runners, Corona would see no more action as Maxon struck out seven batters and added a solo homerun of his own to provide a bigger cushion.

In the bottom half of the first inning, Brophy right fielder Joe Maggi ’11 drew a walk followed by a steal to second.

With two outs, designated hitter AJ Steimel ’10 drilled a two-run homerun over left-center field to put the Broncos up 2-0.

In the second inning, Corona’s Kyle Jorgensen had a base-hit and later scored on a two out RBI single by Brian Lambert to get a run for the Aztecs.

In the bottom of the fifth, Maxon hit a solo shot over left field with one out to expand the lead. Brophy was now up 3-1.

The runs would still come for the Broncos as two batters after Maxon and with two outs, third baseman Kasey Coffman ’10 hit another solo homerun in right field to make the score 4-1.

In the bottom of the sixth, Brophy had the bases loaded with two outs. At the plate, Maxon hit a grounder back to the pitcher.

However, Brett Spradling of the Aztecs threw a low ball past first base. As a result from the error, the two last runs for Brophy touched home plate to give Maxon a 6-1 lead.

Maxon shut down the Aztecs’ last three batters in the seventh inning to seal the win.

“In the very beginning, I felt confident enough with my pitches,” Maxon said. “I threw strikes all game, stuck with my same pitches and my defense helped me out.”

Coach Mr. Tom Succow said he was pleased with the five-run win as well.

Maxon was dominating tonight,” Mr. Succow said. “Corona was the defending state champs and we beat them on our home turf.”

“We had Steimel get a huge hit to get Maxon going on protecting a lead along with extra runs in later innings for insurance,” Mr. Succow added. “This was a gratifying win for us tonight.”
