On Tuesday, April 27 the Broncos did not score any runs and had just five hits against the 14-15 Desert Vista Thunder. Instead, it was the Thunder with the bats scoring 10 runs on 13 hits.
Coming into the game on a three game winning streak, Desert Vista scored their 10 runs in five innings. With a 10-run lead, the game was called due to the mercy rule.
“We did not play the game at all,” said head coach Mr. Tim Succow.
“We could have played better and harder tonight,” Mr. Succow added. “Our team had a good effort Friday and a bad effort tonight. We will come out next game and do what we are supposed to do.”
In the bottom of the first inning, the Thunder hit back-to-back RBI singles to get the early lead at 2-0.
In the third, Desert Vista’s bats heated up. A leadoff double, an RBI double and an RBI triple were the results for the first three batters who provided the Thunder with a quick 4-0 lead.
Starting pitcher for Brophy Sean Maxon ’10 was pulled after two innings giving up four runs, three walks and five hits in 53 pitches leaving the bases loaded in the third.
Trevor Stone ’10 relieved Maxon and struck out the next three hitters to get to the fourth inning.
However, the Broncos did not score a run, and in the bottom of the fourth Desert Vista scored two more runs from two more RBI singles to increase their lead to 6-0.
As Brophy would not score a run again in the fifth, the Thunder would finish the game early by scoring four more runs off of Brophy’s third pitcher Evan Quinn ’10.
The runs came in from an RBI base hit, an RBI double and a two-RBI single for the walk off mercy win.
Desert Vista starting pitcher Hunter Rodriguez completed the five-inning shutout on an average of 15 pitches per inning giving up five hits and two walks to the Broncos.
“It was a horrific game for us tonight,” said Connor Moore ’12. “All we can do as a response from this loss is to show up next game and play our game.”
The loss puts Brophy’s record at 17-9 with one more game left on the season schedule against the Thunder for a rematch April 28.
