Track brings home three champions from state meet

Three Broncos earned state championships and the Brophy track team finished fourth overall in the 5A-I state championship meet Saturday, May 15.

The team finished behind Chandler, Mesa Mountain View and Desert Vista after score 75 total points in the meet.

State champion Harry Danilevics ’10 won the 300-meter intermediate hurdles with a time of 37.24 seconds, which places fifth on the list of fastest times in Arizona track and field history. The time is also a new school record.

Lacrosse captures third state championship in four years

The Brophy lacrosse team won the 5A-I state championship Friday, May 14, 10-8 against Chandler to bring home their third championship in four seasons, including back-to-back championships in 2007-2008.

Brock Ghelfi ’12 scored four goals and assisted on another according to, tied with Adam Fishman ’10 for the team lead in points for the game with five.

Brophy trailed 3-2 at the end of the first quarter then took a 6-4 halftime lead. They expanded their lead to 9-6 at the end of the third and tacked on their 10th goal in the final quarter.

Baseball knocked out of playoffs

Brophy’s baseball team entered the state playoffs on a two-game losing streak and continued their struggles with two early defeats to knock them out of the tournament.

In their first game of the playoffs, the Broncos lost to the Hamilton Huskies 6-4 and dropped into the losers’ bracket where they met Cesar Chavez May 4.

Cesar Chavez beat the Broncos 12-5 in the game to move on and the Broncos, with their second loss in the double-elimination tournament, saw their season come to a close.

Track places high at region meet

The Brophy track team placed third in the Fiesta region meet with 107 points, finishing behind Chandler and Desert Vista.

The team will move on to play in the state meet Wednesday, May 12 and Saturday, May 15. The meet events will take place at Mesa Community College.

In a recent e-mail to the team, head coach Mr. Bill Kalkman said he expects Brophy’s top athletes to place in 13 of the 17 state events.

Brophy runner continues to stand out on top

Since the fith grade, Brophy star runner Will Firth ’11 has been competing in some way or another.

He said he only began running cross country to train for his primary sport, tennis, but after winning a few races his eighth-grade year, he began to take it more seriously.

“It wasn’t until my freshman year in high school that I ran cross country,” Firth said, “I really blossomed and I started running really well and became a part of the varsity cross country team.”
