A week after losing to St. Mary’s, the Brophy football team traveled back to Phoenix College Field Sept. 16, this time as the home team to take on the undefeated Centennial Coyotes.

Centennial shut the Broncos’ offense out in the first half and it was enough for the Coyotes to gain their fourth consecutive win by a score of 30-7.

The Broncos’ record dropped to 2-2 with their second straight loss.

This was also the Broncos’ second loss Centennial. Last year Brophy played the Coyotes at Peoria and lost 24-12.

“The turnover ratio was an absolute joke,” said Brophy head coach Mr. Scooter Molander.

Brophy had four turnovers from two fourth down incompletions, a fumble loss and an interception.

Right after receiving the ball to start the game, the Coyotes produced a six-play drive that drove them down the field 62 yards.

They scored on a Jebron Harrington six-yard touchdown run to make the score 7-0 with 9:42 left in the first quarter.

The Brophy offense answered with three drives in the quarter, all ending with punts.

The second quarter was no different for the Broncos’ offense as they had three more drive that again resulted with punts from Matt Auran’13.

The Broncos had a total of three first down conversions in the first half.

The Brophy defense however, held off the Coyotes after their first drive until 4:50 left in the half.

Quarterback Justin Sanchez faked the run and took off himself down the sidelines for a 72-yard touchdown run to increase the score to 14-0.

In the last minutes of the half Centennial added three more points with a 41-yard field goal from Alex Kammeyer to give the Coyotes a 17-0 lead at halftime.

This became the third game out of four in the season where the Broncos have not scored a single point in one half.

The other two games were against Gilbert in the second half and against Deer Valley in the first half.

On Brophy’s first drive in the third, they got the ball in range to attempt a 37-yard field goal. However, Zac Bryan ’12 missed it and the Broncos remained with no points.

With 8:27 left in the fourth Jalen Oritz of the Coyotes scored on a 49-yard touchdown run to improve the lead to 24-0.

About two minutes later, the Broncos received their first score of the game on a Frederick Gammage ’12 seven-yard touchdown reception. Gammage had 81 receiving yards on five catches in the game.

Centennial countered on their following drive with a one-yard touchdown run from Zach Hoffpauir.

The extra point was blocked by the Brophy special teams but the scoreboard showed the Coyotes leading 30-7, which was enough to pick up the victory.

Quarterback Tyler Bruggman ’13 went 16-35 passing with 222 yards. He threw one touchdown and one interception. Receiver Devon Allen ’13 made five catches for 92 total yards.

On the defense, lineman Charley Beck ’12 added two more sacks to his total of six for the year. Beck has sacked the quarterback two times in each of the last three games.

Brophy had a total of three penalties compared to Centennial’s 14.

“We did a better job on penalties and our defense played well to keep us in the game. However, we are inconsistent right now and the team who wins completes the little consistent plays especially when they matter,” Mr. Molander added.

The Broncos play their first opponent in the Fiesta region, the Chandler Wolves next week on Sept. 23.
