Golf team promises potential in new season

The Brophy Golf Team has finally broken their dry spell.

After 10 years of losing the Brophy Invitational, the Brophy team pulled out a 455-455 victory against Hamilton, with the score coming down to a fifth man tiebreaker.

This year’s golf team, 15 members strong, is comprised of five seniors, six sophomores and four freshmen.

The team is young but Paul Pullin’11 said he does not think a lack of upperclassmen to be a disadvantage to the group.

“If anything, I believe it’ll hopefully make the incoming seniors work harder over the summer,” he said.

Pullin said he also believes the way Mr. Jon Shores is conducting the “young team” is very straight forward and shows his experience as a coach.

“All is simply based off of scoring average and qualifying…if you’re posting the lower scores, you’ll play,” Pullin said.

As for goals this year, Pullin said that he would like to have the same effect on this year’s younger players that last year’s seniors had on him.

“Lead the guys to a successful season and play the best golf I can,” he said.

While some coaches would accept or pick vague goals for their teams and their players, Mr. Shores does not believe in doing this.

“We always play to win,” Mr. Shores said. “Don’t come if you want your goal to be to play in the top five or win state. That’s a given, that’s why you play.”
