Broncos held scoreless for first time since 2008

The Hamilton Huskies shut out Brophy in a 27-0 loss Oct. 22, the first time the Broncos have not scored a point since they last played Hamilton in Chandler.
On their first possession, Brophy went three-and-out that led to a 25-yard Hamilton field goal with 7:33 left in the first quarter.
Brophy’s best drive of the night, 52 yards, was stopped by a missed 34-yard field goal by Zac Bryan ’12 with 11:15 to go in the half.
With about 8:07 left in the second quarter, Hamilton kicked a 39-yard field goal to stretch the lead to 6-0 going into halftime.
Hamilton received the ball to start the second half and went 77 yards in four plays with four straight first downs to score on an eight-yard quarterback run by senior quarterback Kyren Poe to make the lead 13-0 with 9:58 remaining in the third quarter.
Poe is the team’s leading rusher so far this season.
After another Broncos’ three-and-out, Hamilton had another 77-yard drive punctuated by junior receiver Kendyl Taylor’s 7-yard run for a touchdown to make it 20-0 with 1:16 left in the third quarter.
Taylor also caught a 74-yard passing touchdown with 7:50 left in the game to make it 27-0 Hamilton, which would be the final score.
Quarterback Fred Gammage ’12, playing for the injured Tyler Bruggman ’13 and Garret Wilson ’11, went 10-19, 77 yards and a late interception.
“(He played) very well,” said Brophy coach Mr. Scooter Molander when asked about Gammage’s performance. “He hasn’t played quarterback since Pop Warner, it’s been a while. He competed, he’ll learn. He made some mistakes but he made some really good throws.”
The Husky defense kept pressure on Gammage all night, recording six sacks. Three of those were by senior defensive lineman Shaq Jenkins.
The only spark for Brophy’s offensive in the second half was Devon Allen ’13 who had a 64-yard kickoff return to get the Broncos to the Hamilton 36-yard line as well as a 21-yard return later in the game.
Receiver Matt Auran ’13 had four catches for 48 yards including a 17-yard catch to get the Broncos a first-and-goal at the Hamilton 9-yard line.
However, the Broncos failed to score any points on that drive due to three sacks and a penalty.
Hamilton’s Poe went 12-17 with 207 yards and one touchdown for Hamilton.
He also rushed 17 times for 60 yards and a touchdown.
Taylor finished the night with five catches for 135 yards including the 74-yard touchdown catch.
He also rushed for 20 yards and a 7-yard touchdown.
Opposite Taylor, senior receiver Tanner Clay had six receptions for 79 yards.
Brophy had 83 yards of total offense with only 17 yards in the second half and Hamilton had 389 yards of total offense, 267 in the second half.
Despite these statistics, Mr. Molander said that, “the defense played excellent, gutsy.”
“We didn’t have long, sustained drives. The defense was on the field the whole time,” Mr. Molander said in response to why Hamilton was able to score their three touchdowns in the second half.
With this loss the Broncos fall to 4-4 overall and 2-2 in the Fiesta Region.
On Oct. 29, the Broncos will face Desert Vista who is coming off of a win against Chandler and are currently sitting on a 6-2 overall record, 2-1 in the Fiesta Region.
“That’s our season, quite frankly,” Mr. Molander said about the importance of the Desert Vista game. “It allows us to continue towards the playoffs. We need to win the next two games. The next game is the most important one.”
