Turkey Drive encourages students to take action on behalf of poor

By Mason Smith ’11
THE ROUNDUP

Hunger and poverty are severe problems in America, and in a down economy, the problem is only getting worse.

According to feedingamerica.org, in 2009, 43.6 million people (14.3 percent of the total population) in America were living in poverty, and in 2008, 49.1 million Americans lived in household where a food supply was insecure.

This is where Brophy stops in and lends a hand each November with the Turkey Drive.

The Turkey Drive is designed to help those who are living in poverty and have to deal with hunger on a daily basis.

Students are asked to donate money in their sixth period classes so that they can contribute to the cause.

“We are looking for students to have an open mind and open heart during the Turkey Drive,” Mr. Eddie Cullen wrote in an e-mail. “We hope students can open themselves up to the injustices of the poor and marginalized and in turn offer whatever they can to the Turkey Drive.”

Last year the Turkey Drive raised $18, 650. The OFJ’s goal for this year’s drive is $25,000.

This year’s Turkey Drive will be held from Nov. 1 to Nov. 23.
