The Brophy baseball team (9-4 overall) looked ready to finish the game against Salpointe Catholic (10-4-2 overall) by mercy rule after the scoreboard showed the Broncos leading 10-1 after three innings.
However, in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, the Lancers scored 11 runs on nine hits and six walks.
“Salpointe is not a team we will run over no matter how many runs we score,” said head coach Mr. Tom Succow.
Regardless of Salpointe’s late scoring rally, Brophy’s 13 total runs were enough to win the game 13-12 Wednesday, March 23.
The Broncos tacked on a total of 10 runs in the first three innings before adding three more later in the game. They scored three runs in the first, three runs in the second and four runs in the third.
Three of Brophy’s 13 runs came off of singles by Joe Maggi ’11 and Chris Beall ’12. Seven other runs scored from errors, pass balls, walks and sacrifice flies.
Connor Moore ’12 provided the only RBI double scoring Ryan Grant ’12. Beall and Dave Graybill ’12 hit back-to-back solo homeruns in the fifth.
Graybill was also the starting pitcher for the Broncos. He went three-plus innings on 77 pitches giving up two runs on three hits and six walks while striking out four Lancers.
Graybill’s counterpart, Salpointe’s Hunter Miller went four-plus innings on 113 pitches surrendering all 13 runs on 10 hits and six walks while striking out six Broncos.
Nick Jones ’11, Matt Mittelstaedt ’11, Connor Messman ’13 and Maggi pitched the rest of the game and combined for a total of 10 surrendered runs.
The Lancers last attempt to tie the game was when they had runners on first and second with two outs in the seventh. However, Maggi got the last Lancer batter to fly out to left field ending the contest.
“It was a tremendous credit for our team to put a nail in the coffin,” Mr. Succow said.
Mr. Succow also said this win was not in normal Brophy baseball fashion.
“This is the way we have been playing lately. We haven’t clicked yet, but well get there,” he said.
The Broncos travel to Red Mountain Friday, March 25 to take on the Mountain Lions before hosting the Horizon/Big League Dugout National Invitational playing other Jesuit schools Monday, March 28.
