Monday, March 28 kicked off the Horizon/Big League Dugout National Invitational at Brophy where the Broncos’ baseball team faced the La Jolla Country Day Torreys from California.

The Torreys (7-1 overall) came into the tournament undefeated, but after Brophy starting pitcher Sean Maxon-Maldonado ’11 pitched six innings on 95 pitches giving up one run, La Jolla Country Day was victim to its first loss of the season 8-1.

“He (Maxon-Maldonado) threw the ball in the strike zone,” said head coach Mr. Tom Succow. “At least two of his three pitches were strikes. The pitching staff and team needed that performance tonight.”

Maxon-Maldonado also surrendered eight hits and two walks while striking out four Torreys.

Chris Beall ’12 recorded the last out for Maxon-Maldonado in the top of the sixth by throwing out the runner at home in from second on a single to center field.

Joe Maggi ’11 pitched the seventh inning for the Broncos on 22 pitches to seal the win.

Starting pitcher for the Torreys Tommy Edman pitched four innings on 71 pitches giving up four runs and seven hits to the Broncos.

Brophy scored two runs in the first, two in the fourth, one in the fifth and three in the sixth. Two of the runs scored from two RBI singles by Dave Graybill ’12.

Two more runs scored off of bases-loaded walks, three more scored off of throwing and fielding errors by the Torreys and the last run came in due to a sacrifice groundout at second by Connor Messman ’13.

“We needed to manufacture runs through bunts and basehits and we did,” Mr. Succow said. “We did not rely on homeruns for runs.”

The Broncos moved to 11-4 overall and 5-1 in tournament play.
