The Brophy track and field team will use the Brophy Sports Complex for the first full season, after only using it for a few months last April after the grand opening.

“With the new track facility we can train more consistently and more specifically on all our events,” said Mr. Bill Kalkman, head of the track and field program.

The team will host their first home invitational March 11.

Seven other schools will compete.

Pole vaulting on Brophy’s premises is a new concept to the list of events, and now there will be more athletes doing this since Brophy does not have to pay for students to travel to other locations for practice.

“It’s an opportunity for an athlete that is interested in that dynamic, gymnastics type event that they can train here and not have to train for a club,” Mr. Kalkman said.

According to Tommy Williams ’11, a middle distance runner, and Will Firth ’11, a long distance runner, this year’s team could be a threat to other schools in the division.

“Because of the new Divisions, there will be no 5A-1 and 5A-2; only Division 1. This is a change that can really work in our favor since we have so many outstanding athletes in various events,” Firth said.

An event athletes said they look forward to and train hard for is the meet in Arcadia, Calif., where top athletes from Brophy will compete against other schools in California and the Southwest region.
