The Brophy Broncos faced Red Mountain Sept. 9 under a lightning storm that would temporarily halt the game, but the delay didn’t stop the Broncos’ special teams from helping to secure a 31-13 win.

“I think special teams,” said Brophy football head coach Mr. Scooter Molander of the team’s strong point for the night. “Despite the kickoff return, I felt like we did a nice job on all the other areas.” “We were solid on PAT’s and field goals, we got a punt return and I am proud of our development in that area.”

Brophy started the game by receiving the ball and going a three and out, punting to Red Mountain.

The first points of the game didn’t come until there were three minutes left in the first quarter.

Red Mountain drove the ball down field and scored with a 10-yard run to take a 7-0 lead.

But that didn’t intimidate the Broncos. Devon Allen ’13 started the next series with a 45-yard run that led Allen to score the Broncos’ first touchdown with an eight-yard rush to the end zone making the score 7-7 with two minutes left in the first quarter.

The Bronco defense forced Red Mountain to go three and out on their next possession. When Red Mountain punted the ball, Allen was back to receive.

Allen returned the ball 60-yards for a touchdown to give Brophy a 14-7 lead with 17 seconds left in the first quarter.

With the start of the second quarter lightning was starting to light up the sky.

Three plays into the second quarter Ryan Castellani ’14 intercepted a Red Mountain pass and took the ball to Red Mountain’s eight-yard line.

It took the Broncos two plays for running back D’ Amani Grayer ’13 to rush two yards for a touchdown.

Brophy now led Red Mountain 21-7 with 10:30 left in the second quarter.

With Brophy holding a steady lead going into halftime, the lightning was drawing closer and closer to the field.

Right before the third quarter was to begin the referees called for a delay of a game due to the weather. So the teams headed back to their locker rooms to wait to see if the storm would pass.

After an hour of a weather delay, the referees decided play could continue.

At the start of the third quarter Red Mountain received the ball and was forced to punt after six plays.

It took Brophy six plays to get a 52-yard pass from quarterback Tyler Bruggman ’13 to Allen for another touchdown.

Brophy now led 28-7 with seven minutes left in the third quarter.

At the start of the fourth quarter it was pouring rain, but the game continued.

With six minutes left in the fourth quarter Zach Hudson ’12 kicked a field goal to give Brophy a 31-7 lead.

On the kickoff to Red Mountain, the Mountain Lions were able to avoid Brophy’s kickoff team and run the ball in to score their first points since the first quarter to make the score 31-13 with a failed two-point conversion.

Brophy went three and out on their next possession, but the Bronco defense was able to prevent Red Mountain from going very far, causing a turnover on downs.

With only 1:30 left Brophy ran out the clock to win 31-13 and they improved to 3-0.

Bruggman went 7-14 with 152 passing yards and one touchdown

Allen ran for 65 yards with three touchdowns, a 60 yard punt return and caught two passes for 58 yards.

Grayer ran for 71 yards and one touchdown.

“(Allen) is a tremendous athlete and Tyler Bruggman is a great quarterback and we have a lot of weapons and our guys were able to make some adjustments so I am really proud of our football team,” Mr. Molander said.

“(The best part of the game) was for sure our blocking of our wide receivers and our hard running from the running backs,” kicker Clarence Clarke ’13 said.

The Broncos will play Sandra Day O’Connor Friday, Sept. 16 at home.
