Brophy wide receiver Fred Gammage ’12 nabbed three touchdown catches Friday, Sept. 30 to help the Broncos hand the Mountain Pointe Pride a 31-14 loss.

Brophy was able to avenge last year’s 13-12 loss to Mountain Pointe in the second round of the playoffs.

“Mountain Pointe has been running the ball very well against just about anyone,” said coach Mr. Scooter Molander. “I’m proud of our guys for recognizing formations and then for the most part we tackled well and we really ran to the football.”

On the opening drive, Brophy went all the way down to the Pride’s 30-yard line the Broncos could not connect on a 47-yard field goal attempt.

Two plays later, Mountain Pointe senior running back Dillan Johnson scored on a 76-yard touchdown run to make it 7-0 Pride with 6:17 left in the first quarter.

Brophy responded in three plays with a touchdown of their own.

After a 38-yard pass from Tyler Bruggman ’13 to Devon Allen ’13, Bruggman hooked up with Gammage for a 27-yard score making it 7-7 with 5:34 left in the first.

The Broncos held Mountain Pointe to a three-and-out which led to a 40-yard drive ending in a three-yard touchdown run by D’Amani Grayer ’13 that made the score 14-7 Brophy with 2:49 left in the opening quarter.

With 10:27 in the second quarter Bruggman hit Gammage for a three-yard score to go up 21-7.

The Pride missed a 30-yard field goal on their next drive and Brophy took over at their own 20-yard line.

A 51-yard run by Grayer set up another Bruggman to Gammage touchdown, this time a 22-yarder, to go up 28-7 with 4:20 left in the half.

The Pride were unsuccessful on a fake punt on the ensuing drive and Brophy took over on the 37-yard line.

Allen jumped over a defender to catch a 29-yard pass from Bruggman and three plays later Zach Hudson ’12 made a 23-yard field goal with 1:48 left in the half to go up 31-7.

The only score after that came in the fourth quarter Mountain Pointe junior running back Garette Craig ran in an eight-yard touchdown to make it 31-14 with 1:15 left in the game and that would be the final score.

After falling behind, Brophy scored 31 unanswered points.

“This is the third time this year that we’ve been in this situation where the opposing team scored first and I’m proud of how the team has responded each and every time,” said coach Mr. Molander.

Gammage said the team keeps improving as a whole.

“We just keep progressing, day by day just getting better and better,” he said.

Grayer ended with 162 yards rushing and a touchdown on 23 carries.

Bruggman went 11-22 for 156 yards and three touchdowns, all to Gammage.

Allen had four catches for 78 yards.

The Broncos improve to 6-0 on the season and will face Westview at home Thursday, Oct. 6.
