THE ROUNDUP

The Alumni Service Corps, or ASC, features six new members this year, five of whom graduated from Brophy.

The ASC is a post-college program for students who graduated from Brophy and other Jesuit high schools across America, and it offers them the chance to return to high school as a faculty member.

The participants are volunteers who serve various roles throughout campus, from leading freshman breakaway to working with the Loyola scholars to teaching classes.

The ASC is currently in its sixth year, as it began in the 2011-2012 school year.

The five participants who graduated from Brophy are Mr. Flavio Bravo ’12, Mr. Alex Higgins ’12, Mr. Wade Hoyt ’12, Mr. John Medici ’12 and Mr. Matt Munhall ’12.

Also, Mr. Theo Baravura, who moved to the United States from Malawi shortly before the new school year, is the sixth member of the ASC.

Mr. Medici went Michigan State, Mr. Bravo went to Loyola University Chicago,Mr. Higgins went to Creighton, Mr. Munhall attended Notre Dame and Mr. Hoyt went to Gonzaga.

“We all had a JVC (Jesuit Volunteer Corps) teacher,” said Mr. Bravo, who teaches Christian ethics and is coordinating the Kino Border Initiative trips. “And she was a great teacher. So, having the opportunity to pay it forward was a really big reason why I wanted to come back.”

Mr. Munhall and Mr. Medici work in the Office of Faith and Justice, and Mr.Munhall also teaches an English class and Medici teaches a government class.

Mr. Alex Higgins, who works in the Loyola building, said he joined the ASC because he looked up to one of the members of ASC when he was a senior.

“One of the guys that was in ASC, I looked up to him a lot and we had a really good relationship,” Mr. Higgins said. “He told me that I should do it once I get to that point, and I just followed through with it.”

The ASC was in its first year of existence in 2012, which is when these teachers graduated, and their roles have increased dramatically since the program’s inception.

Mr. Baravura did not attend Brophy, but came from Malawi to join the ASC.

Joe Slaven [’09] is the one who interested and connected me to Brophy,” Mr. Baravura said. “He graduated from Brophy Prep some years ago.”

Many of the members of the Alumni Service Corps said they believe this job presents them with the opportunity to give back to Brophy.

“I don’t think I would have had the opportunity to attend such a great university like Loyola Chicago if I hadn’t received this incredible Jesuit education at Brophy,” Mr. Bravo said. “So, I see this ASC year as an opportunity to pay it forward.”
