THE ROUNDUP

Brophy lost its second straight game in a close contest Friday Aug. 25 against Desert Ridge at Central High School.

Unable to score any points in the second half, the Broncos lost to Desert Ridge in a 30-21 defeat.

The Brophy defense forced three fumbles, two of which were recovered by Andrew Onyepunuka ‘19.

Head Coach Mr. Scooter Molander said Brophy suffered from mental mistakes and that penalties were an issue throughout the game.

“Too many shooting ourselves in the foot,” said Mr. Molander. “The good news is the mistakes we made are fixable.”

Brophy scored all 21 of their points in the second quarter. Ross Velez ‘18 ran for a pair of touchdowns, both of which came on runs starting from inside the 10-yard line.

Donovan Arthur ‘18 caught the other on an 18-yard reception with 1.2 seconds left in the half. Jackson Garcia ‘19 completed all three extra points.

The offense was unable to find their end zone for the rest of the game.

The defensive backs held Desert Ridge to a total of 76 receiving yards.

“Overall, I think we played really well, especially not letting them get many receiving yards” said strong safety Marcus White ’19. “The [defensive backs] did a good job of shutting down the quarterback.”

On the ground, Desert Ridge earned 308 rushing yards.

“We allowed the quarterback to scramble a few times, and it hurt us,” Mr. Molander said.

Desert Ridge’s quarterbacks alone rushed for a total of 91 yards, nearly one third of the team’s total rushing yards.

Brophy will play an away game at Westview High School next week where they will face off against the Knights.

“Huge improvement over last week, and that’s what I want to focus on,” Mr.  Molander said. “We fought for four quarters, we did battle, and we need to find a way to win and we will.”
