THE ROUNDUP

Brophy wrestling concludes their season by sending two wrestlers to the Arizona State Championships, placing third and fourth in their respective divisions. Ty Trickle ’24 defeated competitors from Marana and Mountain Ridge but later lost to Chandler’s four-time State champion Zach Espalin. Trickle went on to place fourth in the state in the 126-pound division.

The other Bronco competitor at the State Championship, David Sweetman ’23 won three bouts, taking third place in the 182-pound division. Sweetman only lost one bout the entire year, leaving him highly ranked heading into next season.

“This season’s practices really got me ready for the state championship this year,” Sweetman said. Along with the preparation practices gave him, he also credits ‘Flashing Lights’ by Kanye West and ‘Suge’ by Dababy for getting him mentally ready to compete.

“As for next year, I’m trying to bulk up to the 220-pound division for next season,” Sweetman said explaining that he had to cut weight to qualify for the 182-pound division this season. Bulking consists of eating in a calorie surplus and lifting heavy weights, while cutting is eating just enough calories to lose or maintain weight.

Sweetman and Trickle were the only Brophy wrestlers to compete at the State Championships this year. “Overall we did alright as a team but we have to get better for next year because it can’t just be me and Ty again,” Sweetman explained.

A large part of the improvements Sweetman wants to see for next year is going to be getting more wrestlers into the State Championships. “Some guys are cutting weight, I’m not a fan of that, I think more of our team needs to bulk for next year,” Sweetman said.

After bulking up to 220 pounds, Sweetman sets his sights on dominating the 220-pound division throughout the season and winning the State Championship for his weight class. Looking towards the future after graduating from Brophy, Sweetman plans on wrestling in college saying “I’m not sure where I want to go yet, but I’m okay with any school that is willing to take me”.
