OPINIONS: Phoenix is environmentally challenged, lacks culture, struggling sports teams

By Chris Agnone ’18
THE ROUNDUP

Phoenix is a rapidly growing city, but it has a lot of issues like its sports teams, environmental awareness and the fact that the city is so spread out.

The first issue is the sports side of Phoenix. There is not a consistent team that anyone can root for that has Phoenix or even Arizona on the jersey.

Devin Booker is really good, but the Suns … are you kidding me? This makes Phoenix residents have to root for out of state teams and the problem of no team support compounds itself.

Everyone has given up on the Cardinals after their terrible season following their reality TV show.

The Coyotes hockey team has not been good for a long time and this is Arizona … no one watches hockey.

Next, Phoenix is having problems being environmentally sustainable in a lot of forums.

These problems range from restrictions on solar power, unsustainable use of construction materials such as crumb asphalt, and an excess use of water for things like grassy yards and golf courses.

Phoenix was even named The Most Unsustainable City in the U.S. by Fact Co. Design.

Luckily, Phoenix gets a pretty good amount of water from the Colorado River, so there is always excess water, but we are using way more than we should. For as hot as Phoenix is, a lot of people have green, grassy yards, and there are a lot of golf courses watering the grass two to three times a day in the summer, just to keep it alive.

Finally, Phoenix builders decided that, instead of building buildings up, they would built out. Thanks to them, it is a huge commute to get anywhere.

This means that cars are burning more gas, and thus, being less environmentally friendly.

Some people love Phoenix for the nice winter weather and desert scenery. Personally, I can not wait to leave.

I do not completely dislike Phoenix. It is the only place I know of that a person can ski and golf in the same weekend.

Other than that … I am not sure.
