Phoenix artists express themselves on the canal

The Phoenix Mural Festival was an art event spanning from Feb. 3 to March 6 to paint neighborhoods and shop walls facing the Phoenix Grand Canal. These murals were painted from 7th Street to 15th Avenue along the canal and were created by both local artists from the group Love Fights Back and the Chicago-based art group Paint the City. The project was intended to give artists a space to show their creative work while also providing art for the community.

Artists Ahmad Lee and Missy Jem pose for a photo. “What the art means to me is self expression. Being able to express yourself and being able to collectivize the feeling of a group of people and express it in a way that words just can’t.” -Ahmad Lee
