The Arizona Interscholastic Press Association awarded The Roundup first place in its 2015 Newspaper General Excellence contest as well as first place in its 2015 Multimedia General Excellence contest.

The Roundup staff also took home 35 individual awards in the annual student newspaper contest.

The AIPA, the state’s largest scholastic press organization, announced the honors at its annual journalism convention Oct. 27 at ASU.

“This year’s first place is a testament to the commitment to excellence and innovation the publication has been striving toward for many years,” said former Co Editor in Chief Garrison Murphy ’15, who is now a student at Arizona State University’s Cronkite School of Journalism and a reporter at ASU’s State Press. “The talent and commitment in the staff was already clear to me and I’m really glad the AIPA has recognized that. It shows that the publication has been able to continue to pursue excellence in high school journalism and continue to push the limits of what it can do to serve the community.”

These honors come on the heels of two other recent, large awards for The Roundup.

In September the Arizona Newspapers Association, the state’s professional journalism organization, named The Roundup the 2015 “Best High School Newspaper” in its annual contest co-sponsored by the Arizona Associated Press Managing Editors.

The Roundup won this award in 2013, 2012 and 2011 with a second place finish in 2014.

Also in September the National Scholastic Press Association named The Roundup a 2015 “Pacemaker Finalist” for the third year in a row. The Pacemaker is the organization’s highest honor for a publication.

The 2014/2015 Co Editors in Chief were Murphy and Austin Norville ’15. The 2015/2016 Co Editors in Chief are Cameron Bray ’16 and Anthony Cardellini ’17.

The Roundup publishes five print editions each year along with its frequently updated website and social media presence on Facebook and Twitter.
