Tyler Bruggman ’13 did more than lead the Broncos to a 30-13 season opener Aug. 27.

Bruggman went 19 for 41 in Friday’s victory over Deer Valley, throwing for three touchdowns and an interception as he made his first varsity start for the Broncos.

But the major story of Bruggman’s night was his passing yards, 317.

According to Horsepower, Brophy’s sports program, Bruggman’s 317 yard performance was the third most passing yards in a single game in Brophy history.

Steve O’Hare ’94 and Cody Martin ’90 are the only other Brophy quarterbacks to pass for more yards in a single game. Both players threw their record performances as juniors while Bruggman’s game comes as a sophomore, in his varsity debut no less.

O’Hare who threw for 325 yards against Brophy’s chief rival St. Mary’s in 1993 as a junior. Martin threw for 325 yards against Maryvale in 1989, also as a junior.

The player Bruggman passed for third on the all-time list is Bryan Berens ’07 who threw for 285 passing yards in a 2006 contest against Desert Vista.

Berens and Bruggman share the same jersey number of 14, a connection head coach Mr. Scooter Molander commented on after the team’s 30-13 victory Aug. 27.

“There’s a reason why he chose No. 14 and he asked (Berens) if it’d be okay if he wore that number and I’m not surprised at all,” Mr. Molander said.

“Tyler’s a special kid and he’s got special receivers and the offensive line did a great job in pass protection,” Mr. Molander said in a follow-up interview with The Roundup on Tuesday, Aug. 31.
