Sports year in review, teams earn four state titles

THE ROUNDUP

Football 

The football team finished with a 7-3 record in Mr. Jon Kitna’s first and final season as head coach. Football exited the playoffs in a first round loss against Red Mountain despite valiant efforts of strong safety and Dartmouth commit Marques White ’19

Swimming

Swimming’s dominance continued as they won their 31st consecutive state championship this season under new head coach Mr. Daren Brubaker. Michigan commit Parker Hughes ’19 won the 100 free and was key on relays during the state meet in November. 

Cross Country 

Player of the year Anekin Hetman ’19 led the cross country team to a third place team finish at the Arizona Cross Country Championship. Hetman will continue his running career at New Mexico State University next fall. 

Golf 

Head Coach Mr. Jon Shores led the golf team to capture it’s second state championship in the program’s history behind the leadership of UCLA commit Tony Hendricks ’19

Soccer 

In his second year as head coach, Mr. Paul Allen ’03 lead Soccer to win their first state championship since 2013. Carson Edwards ’19Logan Abele ’20 and Case Montanile ’20 all scored in the 3-0 victory over Hamilton on Feb 21. 

Wrestling 

Wrestling was capped off with Cesar Avelar ’22 finishing third in the 106 pound weight class and Thomas Derr ’20 placing fifth in the 182 pound weight class at the state tournament. 

Hockey 

Hockey finished their regular season 4-15-1 which made them the sixth seed in the 6 team league. They exited the playoffs in a first round loss to Sandra Day O’Connor High School. 

Basketball

Basketball finished their season in a loss to the Pinnacle Pioneers in the state semi-finals. The team finished with a 10-8 record and was led by seniors Ryan Gilburne ’19 and Alec Owen ’19.

Baseball 

Baseball has a record of 11-5 halfway through the season in Mr. Josh Garcia’s ’07 second year coaching the program. Pitcher Mason Kokodynski ’19  has the most strikeouts with 36 in four games. Will Worthington ’19 leads the hitters with a .442 batting average. 

Tennis

Tennis finished the year undefeated and brought home their third straight state title. Five-star player Jack Brown ’22 led the team to a championship victory in the California Tennis Classic as well. 

Volleyball

Volleyball is currently 7-3 in conference play which ranks them fifth in the state. Outside hitter Andrew Warner ’22 and Middle Rohan Sidhu ’19 have been key components to Head Coach Mr. Tony Oldani’s volleyball team. 

Lacrosse 

Lacrosse finished the year in a 8-7 loss against Notre Dame Prep in the State Championship under second year Head Coach Mr. Zach Widbin. Freshman attackmen Cole Rassas ’22 lead the team in goals. 

Rugby 

Rugby is heading into the playoffs in third place looking to repeat their division two state championship from a year ago. Seniors Josh Lesley ’19, John Roney ’19, Andrew Onyepunuka ’19 and EJ Hamilton ’19 lead the team in their campaign for another title.
