THE ROUNDUP
As Brophy musicians come together on and off campus they are able to showcase their musical talents in new ways to larger audiences outside of school.
The student bands performed at the FAE showing their talents to the Brophy community.
Saint Rosemary:
A large group of Brophy and Xavier students stood up and crowded around the stage as band members Jeff Bennett ’13, Keaton Leander ’13, Mark Miller ’13, Michael Lucero ’13 and Xavier senior Carly Chapel ’13 of Saint Rosemary began their performance at the Fine Arts Extravaganza.
Saint Rosemary has been together for only about three weeks. Leander and Miller performed in a band together called Once upon a time, and Keaton knew Jeff Bennett ’13 through the band One’s to Remember.
Lucero, who performed in Jazz band with Keaton, and Miller also went to prom with Chapel. Later, this group of friends decided to start a band together.
The group originally consisted of 12 students, but as the FAE approached, they became short on time forced to reduce their set list.
They had only rehearsed twice before the FAE, and this was their first live performance. They performed a band favorite “The Cave” by Mumford and Sons.
City Kids:
City Kids consists of band members Joe Weiss ’14, Van Cummerford ’14 and Wesley Ganz ’14. Weiss and Ganz had originally been a band for a year. When their bassist quit three months ago they created a new band and brought in Cummerford, which created the present day City Kids.
They originally all met when they had P.E. together freshman year. Weiss and Ganz tried to start a band, but they could not find a drummer, so they eventually stopped.
Later Weiss started a band with his friend, and they came together in the end to create City Kids.
They usually rehearse every Saturday, but they have not gotten together recently because of Cummerford’s performance in the play “A Few Good Men” and his commitment to the Brophy band during football games.
The FAE was their first performance in more than six months.
Money Men
Money Men, consisting of members David Tonner ’15 and Matt Montez ’15, created their band last year. Tonner and Montez were on the crew team together and they found out that they both played instruments and sang, so they just agreed to start a band together.
They both said they are quite busy and don’t rehearse often. During Tonner and Montez’s rehearsals, they decide what songs they want to play.
Money Men performed their first live performance in the Mall during the Fine Arts Extravaganza.
You Wouldn’t Believe
You Wouldn’t Believe is made up of members Pratap Jayaram ’13, Alex Gross ’13, Greg Goulder ’13 and Anchal Jain ’13
You Wouldn’t Believe has been a band since freshman year. It began with Jayram, Goulder,and Jain. Then they brought Gross into the band near the end of their freshman year. Their band began when Jayram and Jain had summer school together before the beginning of their freshman year.
Jayram and Goulder had been friends since kindergarten. Their Band began with Jayram on bass, Goulder on guitar and Jain on drums, but they did not have anyone who could sing.
They did eventually find a senior who could sing, but on their first gig they did not do the greatest and ended up parting ways. Later another friend, Jake Flick ’13, volunteered to sing and play guitar.
Then Jayram began to do some singing for the group. At the end of freshman year Gross joined the band, and at the beginning of sophomore year Flick left to keep other time commitments, this is how their band got to their current lineup.
You Wouldn’t Believe rehearses on and off without a real time set because they are busy throughout the week. They schedule practice times when a performance is approaching.
They get about three practices before each show. They perform as often as Brophy will let them; they have only performed once outside of Brophy.
The band said they are pretty casual, and they have never taken it completely serious because they are not trying to make it big. They play in the band to have fun whenever someone so asks them to perform at events like the FAE, Friday Night Lights and Battle of the Bands.
