It is hard to forget the first time going to a Brophy game for any sport. No matter what the sport or event may be, it is obvious that planning goes into these events, and that there is a group that leads in the planning.
One two-year member of this group, known as Student Council, Tyler Mlecko ’21, is a contributor to the class conversations and discussions. “It is not like a normal STUCO class where there are positions, we kind of just sit in a room and throw ideas at each other” Mlecko said.
Mlecko describes STUCO as “its own little think tank,” saying, “you could imagine the amount of ideas that the group is able to come up with.”
Mlecko believes that the reason the group is able to successfully put on a lot of the events is because they use a Socratic seminar style.
One topic that often comes up in the club discussions is that of the mascot and what they will be doing with it this year.
William Ragan ‘21, a first-year student in the class, talks about what they do with the Mascot, “We use him for football games, rally’s, we even used him for our recent back to school video to amp people up.”
Because the world is in such trying times with COVID-19, I asked both Ragan and Mlecko what the procedure is for cleaning the suit.
They both noted the importance of cleaning the suit, but Mlecko was certain saying that they got a new mascot suit this year just to combat the pandemic and make sure they took no chances. After use in an event or game, the mascot is cleaned using soap, water and disinfectant.
Mr. Pete Burr ’09, an administrator at BCP and a part of STUCO, clarified further saying that only one person (anonymous) is allowed to wear the suit and that he is responsible for keeping it clean.
It is glaringly obvious that the world in general, and the Brophy Community specifically is in a bit of a crisis with COVID-19. It is important that the people who represent the student body also represent the awareness and safety that the students are taking in order to ensure a safe time back at school and around the Phoenix Community.
