Junior golfer Toolan successful all year round in school, amateur tournaments

After being a member of the Brophy golf team since his freshman year, Blake Toolan ’13 is at the center of a young core for the 2011 team.

“Blake is definitely one of the best on the team,” said teammate Tyler Kertson ’13. “He has gotten much better since he was a freshman and is now a leader for the other players.”

Clutch fourth quarter plays erase struggles in Bronco win

With just 1:53 remaining in the game, Brophy kicker Zach Hudson ’12 kicked a 46-yard field goal giving the Broncos a 24-21 lead over the Westview Knights Friday, Oct. 6.

That lead would be enough to win the game and allow Brophy to maintain its undefeated record this season.

Swimming reloads with talented senior class, young contributors

High expectations follow Mike Nelson ’12 and Chris Webb ’12 after emerging as two of the top swimmers in the state as part of the 2010 Brophy team.

Last year, Nelson won the 100-yard breaststroke for the Division I state championship while Webb was part of the winning 400-yard freestyle relay team at the state meet.

Broncos remain undefeated with rout of North Canyon

Brophy traveled Friday, Sept. 23 to face the 3-2 North Canyon Rattlers, a Division I/Section III opponent, where the Bronco offense set the tone early en route to a 45-7 victory.
Devon Allen ’13 returned the opening kickoff 90 yards for a score and just minutes later Marche Dennard ’13 ran the ball for a 13-yard score, making the game 14-0.

O’Neill’s swimming background creates coaching success

Ever since his first year of coaching the Brophy swim team in 2006, head coach Mr. Pat O’Neill’s record has showed nothing but success.

Mr. O’Neill began swimming at the age of six and started coaching the sport in college. Starting in 1997, he coached the Mesa Mountain View swim team for nine years before he came to Brophy to coach and teach math.

Broncos approach new season with young core

The 2010 season for the Brophy football team saw changes to their starting quarterback and running back position among others, a rash of season-ending injuries to key players and the adoption of a spread offense.

In 2011, the Broncos will attempt to grow in their second year in the new offensive scheme while welcoming back numerous starters who bring experience to a young group.

New divisional and sectional system changes sports schedules

The AIA instituted divisional realignment over the 2011 summer that moves the Brophy football team to Division I/Section III for the 2011 football season after having played in the 5A-I Fiesta Region since 2009.

Division I is now the highest classification for Arizona high school sports just like 5A-I was in past years. Division II is roughly equal to what 5A-2 was and Division III is nearly the same as 4A.

There are five total athletic divisions and three sections for each division. The sections will replace the regions from the previous format and are based on location.

Allen brings speed and experience to Bronco offense

Brophy wide receiver Devon Allen ’13 was last year’s leading receiver and he returns for the 2011 season regarded as one of the best in the state.

AZCentral.com ranks Allen as the No. 4 receiver in Arizona and Scout.com ranks him at No. 7. Both websites have him ranked as the best junior receiver.

“I try not to pay attention to those kinds of things. I didn’t even know about it until my teammate told me they saw me on the Internet as a ranked receiver,” said Allen.

Brophy track athletes used to running in the hot, dry desert took their talents to the national stage in cooler climates last month.

The Brophy track team traveled to Eugene, Ore. to compete in the Nike Track Nationals Saturday June 26 and finished 12th out of 12 teams.

Alumni compete in Division I lacrosse playoffs

Pierce Bassett ’09 was a four-year varsity starting goalie for the Brophy lacrosse team and helped lead the team to two state championships in four appearances from 2006-2009.

After his four-year tenure as the Broncos’ goalie, Bassett accepted a scholarship to play lacrosse at Johns Hopkins University. He would join his former Brophy teammate Hunter Rodgers ’08.
