This year Mr. Marc Kelly ’88, 11 year Brophy soccer coach, is leading what he says is one of the best team’s ever on the field.

Last year the soccer team went 24-1-2, won the state championship and finished second in the nation.

Soccer fights their way to state championship

The No. 1 ranked Brophy soccer team is the 2011 5A-1 state champions after a 1-0 victory over the Hamilton Huskies Saturday, Feb. 12.

“The guys spoke about national rankings and what we could achieve, but when it came to game-time, nothing else really mattered except pulling together to achieve victory,” head coach Mr. Marc Kelly said in an e-mail Tuesday after the game.

At the half, the game was scoreless but Brophy jumped out to an early lead in the second half when Kyle Seeger ’11 scored on an assist from Esteban Obregon ’11.

Depth of talent, teamwork leading team in 15-win 2010 campaign

Brophy’s varsity soccer team was undefeated as of Jan. 11, with 15 victories and one tied game.

A mid-season highlight was the team’s victory at the Golden State Invitational in California, where the team won the “highly-sought-after” bronze bell.

Striker Riggs Lennon ’13 leads the team with more than 20 goals.
“My personal goal for the season is to lead the team in assists,” said midfielder Esteban Obregon ’11, leading the team with seven assists.

Soccer squad avenges only loss, advances to semifinals

The nationally ranked Brophy soccer team lost only once during the regular season.

That loss came at the hands of the Desert Vista Thunder; the team Brophy squared off against on Saturday, Feb. 5 in the 5A-1 soccer playoffs.

In the regular season, Brophy lost to Desert Vista 3-1 but in their second matchup, only one combined goal was scored.

Soccer team sets big goals for the season, look to garner more fan support

Now that the football season has wound down, the array of helmets and shoulder pads have been put away and replaced with shin guards and netted goals.

“The team is looking great this year,” said team captain Mark Mandala ’11. “With all of the returning players, people back from injuries, team chemistry and an inspiring coaching staff, the year will hopefully be successful.”

The team currently holds three state championships (1990, 1995, 2008) and hopes to add another this year.

Soccer closes season with 1st round playoff loss

Brophy soccer season has come to a close leaving many victories and a few losses in its wake.

“We had an up and down season; we played some very difficult teams, and those teams we beat,” said head coach Mr. Marc Kelly ’87. “And then when we played some teams we should have beat we had bad luck and didn’t get the victories we needed … we had a lot of bad luck this year.”

4-year letter winner looking to cap off senior season

It’s now winter and the gridiron of Loyola Field has been put away.

In its place, large white goals sit silently at each end of the field. This silence is only temporary until the Brophy Soccer team takes the field for their games.

One of the star players on this year’s team that will try shattering the opposing defenses as much as possible is four-year varsity winner and starting striker Brian Hines ’10.
