THE ROUNDUP

“The Bronco Beat Podcast” is a new monthly music podcast hosted by Roundup staff members.

In this episode Julian De Ocampo ’13 and Roan Enright ’13 man the microphone.

The show’s goal is to highlight music recommendations from both staff members, as well as other guests. Each song is discussed and analyzed before a clip of the song is played and the show moves on.

This first episode, recorded at the tail end of 2011, focuses on the top songs of the year. Each host picked three songs they believed were the best of the year before agreeing on one final song as the best of 2011.

  • Julian’s fourth favorite song: “Lonely Boy” by The Black Keys. The two discuss whether or not it’s fair to compare them to The White Stripes. (0:39)
  • Roan’s fourth favorite song: “Get Away” by Yuck. Yuck’s 90s influence is discussed. (3:00)
  • Julian’s third favorite song: “Afternoon” by Youth Lagoon. The indie trend of “twinkling” instrumentation is discussed. (5:30)
  • Roan’s third favorite song: “Modern Art” by The Black Lips. The Black Lips’ summer show at the Rhythm Room in Phoenix is discussed. (7:19)
  • Julian’s second favorite song: “Headlines” by Drake. Drake’s evolution as an artist, as well as 2011 in hip-hop, is discussed. (9:40)
  • Roan’s second favorite song: “Vomit” by Girls. Girls’ album “Father, Son, Holy Ghost” is discussed. (11:55)
  • Roan and Julian agree that the best song of 2011 is (drum roll, please) “Video Games” by Lana del Rey. (13:52)

Do you agree with Julian and Roan’s picks for the best song of 2011? Let us know your opinion on the show or tell us what your favorite songs of the year were in the comment box below.
