Roundup staff members with both awards won at this week’s convention.

Members of The Roundup staff attended the 2022 AIPA Fall Convention on Nov. 15, winning 1st place in the Print Newspaper category and 2nd place in the Online News category.

Current and previous Roundup staff members won 15 individual awards as well, from honorable mentions to superior awards for various categories.

The event consisted of breakout sessions for students to listen to professional journalists talk about their line of work, a keynote speech by Ms. Lina Washington, a sports anchor for 12 News and an awards ceremony to celebrate student journalism in Arizona.

Ms. Washington talked about her career path and her thoughts on the future of journalism.

“I learned there are a lot of high schools that have really good journalism and yearbook programs,” said Ms. Washington. “It’s really cool to see that journalism and photography and storytelling is still thriving in the Valley, where I grew up.”

Other speakers at the event included Bob Adlhoch, Executive Producer for Phoenix Suns Television, Karina Bland, a columnist for USA Today and Lisa Matthews, former Arizona Cardinals reporter.
