Every year, Brophy students donate money during the month of November to help out the less fortunate.

Sixth period classes compete against each other in the Turkey Drive to see who can raise the most money. The winning class of the Turkey Drive will receive a Turkey Drive T-shirt.

As of The Roundup’s press deadline of Nov. 18, students had contributed just more than half of the end goal.

“We have raised approximately $10,300, but we are shooting for $20,000 this year,” said Alumni Service Corps volunteer Mr. Matt Williams, who is in charge of the Turkey Drive.

“Last year, we raised approximately $20,000 to benefit people and communities in need,” he said.

When asked about where the money went to, Mr. Williams said that “The money goes to various charitable organizations, ranging from food banks to homeless shelters.”

“Everybody has been chipping in and getting their class to donate money.  One teacher even wrote a check for $100 on the first day of the drive,” Mr. Williams said.  “It’s great to see everybody getting into the giving spirit.”

While the Turkey Drive has been around for a long time, there are some changes this year.

“This year, we are calculating the winner of total money donated and also the class with the largest average donation per student,” Mr. Williams said.

Even though many are donating to the Turkey Drive, there are some front runners in this charity race.

“Mr. Shores’ class is currently in the lead with $783.50 total, and Mr. Burns’ class has the largest average donation per student with over $27 donated per student in his class,” Mr. Williams said.

The idea behind the Turkey Drive is popular among students as well.

“I think it’s very good. It’s a good way for the students to give back,” said Matt Muller ’12.
