The Broncos defense forced five turnovers, one for a score, to help defeat St. Mary’s 63-0 in their homecoming game Friday, Oct. 14.

Brophy avenged a 16-13 loss to St. Mary’s last year by scoring on every offensive possession but the last.

“Our seniors really led us tonight,” said coach Mr. Scooter Molander. “Our seniors had never beaten them, so there was enough motivation for them to come out and play well.”

The Broncos scored within the first three plays of the game, starting with a 39-yard touchdown run by D’Amani Grayer ’13.

On the next Brophy possession, Tyler Bruggman ’13 hooked up with Grayer for an 11-yard touchdown pass to make it 14-0 Broncos with 5:33 left in the first.

A 27-yard touchdown pass to Allen with 1:09 put the Broncos up 21-0 with 1:09 left.

On the next St. Mary’s possession, Fred Gammage ’12 returned an interception 25 yards for a touchdown with 42 seconds left in the first.

The score was 28-0 Broncos at the end of the first quarter.

Matt Cahal ’12 got his first interception of the season on the Knights’ next series.

An interception by John Trusiak ’12 and a fumble recovery by Andy Furias ’12 followed and from there the Broncos rolled to a 56-0 lead at halftime with additional touchdowns by Andrew Curtis ’13, Allen, Andrew Simon ’12 and Andrew Hale ’12.

The final turnover came from Austin Rodriguez ’12 with an interception in the endzone with 10:59 left in the fourth quarter.

Simon had 86 yards on 15 carries with two touchdowns.

“The offensive line blocked great for me and I just hit the hole hard, it was great team play,” he said.

Bruggman went 12-15 for 135 yards and four touchdowns but was taken out midway into the second quarter.

The final score was 63-0 Brophy, making this the largest margin of victory in the 52-year history of the rivalry.

“In the second half, we didn’t throw the ball once and we kept on moving the chains,” Mr. Molander said. “The first offensive line did a wonderful job, the second offensive line did a wonderful job and obviously any time you shut out a spread that means the defense is playing really well.”

The Knights still lead the all-time series 29-23 but Brophy has won 10 of the last 12 meetings.

The Broncos move to 8-0 on the season and will travel to Westwood to play the Warriors on Friday, Oct. 21.
