Varsity lacrosse morale high for new season

By Pierce Braun ’20

THE ROUNDUP

The varsity lacrosse team is led by Innovative Technologies teacher Mr. Zach Widbin, who has coached lacrosse at Brophy for 9 years.

The varsity team fell short of the state championship in the finals last year, losing to the NDP Saints.

Junior varsity is a no cut team, while varsity is a select team and even returners have to tryout.

“Every year, this team is capable of a state championship.” said returning attack, Jack Clark ’18

Varsity comprises of mostly seniors with some juniors, but there are some sophomores including Mason Dickens ’20 and Emmett Worth ’20 who are hopeful of joining the varsity team for the first time this year.

“The sophomores have a passion for the game, even though many of us have just recently picked the game up,” Dickens said. He added that the bond within the varsity team is unlike any team that he has ever experienced before.

Varsity lacrosse posted a positive win/loss ratio last year of 13-3 and the confidence for this year’s success seems to be high according to Clark.

“The story of this year’s team is ‘we’ll see,’” said Mr. Widbin. “We lost a number of players last year so we have our work cut out for us.”

This is the first year Mr. Widbin is head coach, but his experience in lacrosse goes back to his senior year of highschool, being named All-American lacrosse honors, and was later recruited to Harvard to play midfield.

The team was low on their number of shots taken last year, but according to Mr. Widbin, “The number of shots is not indicative of a successful team, and our offense was predicated on possession and patience. We just have a different philosophy than other teams out there.”

Lacrosse morale according to people such as Mr. Widbin, Mason Dickens ’20, and Jack Clark ’18 seems to be high going into the new year after their previous 13-3 record.
