Recently Brophy college prep hosted their annual hoopcoming on Friday, February 6th. This is always a major event for both parents, teachers, and students of Brophy and Xavier. Brophy faced a top 5 nationally recognized high school team-Sunnyslope. There was a lot of hype leading up to the game and almost every seat in Robson Gymnasium was taken up.
“It was a sold out game. Our student section was triple the size of normal. The noise after each bucket was extremely loud. I haven’t been in an environment like that before.” Enoch Reasy 27’ said
Tyreese Holmes 27’ adds, “the atmosphere was electric I could see the bleachers shake. It was so loud that it was almost quiet.”
Although Brophy fought hard in the first 3 quarters, the momentum began to shift towards Sunnyslope near the end. Sunnyslope’s size and strength caused them to pull away, winning the game 67-54.
“I would say near the end of the game they went on a run and they began to run up the score. We couldn’t cut back on the lead.” Junior guard Holmes 27’ said.
Only being a couple games away from playoffs, this was a huge game to understand the level of competition that Broophy Basketball will go up against in the Open Division.
“Lessons we need to take we have to say consistent and have to stay connected and not to worry about the environment.” Reasy 27’ said.
Brophy Begins the open division playoffs soon and look to compete for the championship, regardless of the environment and level of competiotn in which they face.
Consistency, defensive intensity, and composure in high-pressure moments will define Brophy’s playoff run this year. Although Hoopcoming ended in a tough loss, it gave them a crucial game for championship-level of play and showed what must improve before the playoffs begin.
