THE ROUNDUP
Junior Ryan Breuer ’20 is returning back to the stage with a lead role two years after his last show.
Last performing in eighth grade, Breuer decided to audition for Brophy and Xavier’s fall musical: “Seussical.”
“I actually did this show in fifth grade, but I had a different role,” Breuer said. “I was like ‘oh, I’ve already done this show, I could audition,’ and I ended up getting the lead.”
Breuer landed the role of the Cat in the Hat, one of the show’s lead roles.
Nico Lanese ’20, who plays the lead Wickersham in the show, performed with Breuer in “Seussical” while they attended Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic School together.
“I’ve known Ryan since first grade, and we started doing theater together in around third grade,” Lanese said. “Acting with him is different since he took a break from theater and because this is his first Xavier show.”
While taking time off from theater over the last two years, Breuer has been involved in Mock Trial, Key Club, and Brophy Tennis.
Breuer said that he thought he had lost interest in theater but rediscovered his passion for it when he decided to audition in August.
“I originally started doing theater because my sister did it,” Breuer said. “They had just started a program at my school that was going to be putting on plays and I was like ‘might as well,’ kind of like I did this year.”
Senior Sam Vogel ’19 is also in “Seussical” with Breuer and says it is great to see him enter Xavier theater so smoothly.
“This lead role, for Ryan, has actually been pretty perfect,” Vogel said. “As I’ve gotten to know him, he does really well developing different types of characters, and the Cat in particular encompasses a whole bunch of different characters, so it’s just really cool to see him shine in the spotlight.”
Not only has Breuer rekindled his passion for theatre by accepting the role of Cat in the Hat, but he has also been rekindling a friendship with Lanese.
Lanese said that although they both ended up going to Brophy, he and Breuerhad lost contact over the last two years.
“We hadn’t been in touch so far in high school, but now that we’re in the show, we’re really getting to know each other again,” Lanese said.
Both Breuer and Lanese said the show is going very well and that they are having a lot of fun.
“Ryan is doing especially well,” Lanese said. “He’s gotten back in the game in a snap.”
You can watch Breuer, Lanese, Vogel and other Broncos perform in “Seussical” on Oct. 10, 11 and 13 at 7:00 p.m. all three days, and 2:00 p.m. on the 13th in Xavier’s performing arts center for $10.00.
