If you’ve ever seen a teacher moving from classroom to classroom with a large cart, it’s Mr. Fred Garner.
Mr. Garner teaches in six different classrooms across Community Period and three different courses: AP Precalculus, Honors Spanish III, and Spanish II.
“When I first looked at my schedule for the year, and I saw that I was going to be in six different places, my heart kind of sank,” said Mr. Garner.
He cleared out his room, but needed a place to store all of his materials for each class. His solution to this was a cart that stores his “props,” including his various instruments for songs, as well as whiteboards.
He thought, “Maybe I can put a cart together, and then I can have my kind of mobile teaching unit that I can take with me wherever I go,” said Mr. Garner.
Mr. Garner decorated his cart with fringe and even continued to display African quotes, but instead of on a whiteboard, on the side of his storage box.
To Mr. Garner, the most challenging part of moving classrooms has been the seating arrangements and how each teacher manages their organization.
“I think, as teachers, we all have ways in which we like to have our classrooms organized. So I have to deal with the way different teachers organize their classrooms and try to make it work for me,” said Mr. Garner.
“At the end of the day, would I prefer to have my own space with my own stuff?” said Mr. Garner. But he has come to enjoy it, he mentioned.
He’s just happy at “the fact that I’m able to have my African saying with me and the stuff that kind of made my classroom what it was.”
