Traditional social media apps like Instagram have been facing controversy for negatively affecting the mental health of many users. With many posts being edited to represent an unrealistic standard of life, Instagram feeds into a culture of oversaturation which can overwhelm those who use it. Seeking to counter this unhealthy internet culture, BeReal takes an alternative approach to social media.

BeReal is an app in which all users receive a notification simultaneously to post a single unedited photo per day. Initially launched in 2020 by french entrepreneur duo, Alexis Barreyat, and Kévin Perreau, the premise of the platform is an emphasis on naturality and realistic standards for media posted on the app.

Once the daily notification is sent out users will have only 2 minutes to take and post a photo. Missing the posting period will earn a tag on the post which states it was posted late. This feature ensures that the content is kept as real as possible

This puts a limit on the ability users have to manufacture content, keeping feeds authentic and personal. Creating an environment where the pressure to look your best for friends doesn’t exist.

“I think it’s fun to have a social media app that encourages people to be truer versions of themselves.” said Mr. Jim Welty 14’ who has been exposed to BeReal through his fiance. This is a sentiment that many users seem to share with usage increasing 315% since 2021.

In order to react to posts a photo must be taken for “realmojis” which are BeReal’s take on the traditional like button. This feature extends to comments as well.

Using both the front and back cameras while taking a photo ensures that everyone makes  authentic posts.

BeReal also has a feature that allows a user to link their contacts list to the app, ensuring that real friends are added for a “better” experience.
