Cross country team races to fourth in state meet

Brophy’s cross country team finished its season with a run to a fourth place finish in 2011 the state meet.

This year was considered a rebuilding process since only three of the seven runners at state this year had been there before.

“All of the top varsity members were leaders during the season,” said coach Michael Keahon ’73. “The improvement by the team during the regular season was remarkable.”

Cross country team looks forward with young team, new talent

It was only 7 a.m. on Aug. 30, but it was already 93 degrees and the 2011 Brophy cross country team had already been running for an hour in the hottest recorded August in Arizona history, according to kpho.com.

But their coach said it is not just the group, it is the endurance that makes them good. “This is one of the best teams we’ve ever had, because the players run so close together,” said Mike Keahon ’73, current head coach and member of the Brophy Hall of Fame.

Cross country places high at season-opening meets

The Brophy cross country runners arrive on campus two mornings a week bleary-eyed and sleep deprived as early as 6 a.m. to run on Central Avenue.

For the first few weeks of school these athletes must wake up at such an early hour to get in a practice session before the 100 degree plus Arizona heat hits.

The hard work has evidently paid off because this year the Brophy varsity squad looks to be one of the top teams in the state.

Brophy Cross Country sprints into 5th at state meet, 2 place in top 20

On Saturday, Nov. 7 more than 25 teams participated in the 2009 AIA State Cross Country Tournament, and the Brophy squad placed fifth.

In first place was Jorge Martinez, from Alhambra High School, with a total time of 15:43:673. Coming in second in the race was Jeffrey Segovia, from Trevor G. Brown High School, with a time of 15:47:791. From Corona del Sol, Garrett Baker-Slama took third place with a time of 16:09:926.

Taking 10th place, and first among Brophy’s runners, was Brock Ghelfi ’12, with a time of 16:22:548. Second among Brophy’s runners was Matthew Xuereb ’10, getting 12th place overall. His time was 16:25:890.
