Global warming seems to get more media attention every year as science suggests people continue to pollute the atmosphere with greenhouse gasses.
As a response, Earth Hour started in 2007 as a demonstration in Sydney, Australia where about 2.2 million people and 2,000 businesses turned off their lights and electronics to make a stand against climate change, according to Earthhour.org
On any day, three to five teachers’ bikes are parked in the bike racks below Eller.
These days climate change and rising gas prices entice many Brophy employees to bike or ride mass transit to school.
Forty-three Brophy teachers and employees currently participate in the alternative transportation program, according to Mr. John Buchanan, Brophy security director.
In the near future the student body will find something different on campus; something small, but nonetheless important.
Brophy and Michaels plan to completely eliminate the use of Styrofoam cups in exchange for new, recyclable cups in an effort to become more sustainable; a change that should occur by the inception of this year’s Summit, Feb. 22.
Mr. John Michell, the chair of sustainability at Brophy, spoke to an Advanced Placement Environmental Science class Oct. 27 about the school’s sustainability plans.
This board seeks to educate Brophy students, teachers and parents on how to be sustainable, as well as finding ways to make the current campus, the sports campus and other future projects more sustainable.
“Fr. Reese realized that the area of sustainability is very, very important not only to the school but to our community,” Mr. Michell said. Mr. Michell also serves as a Brophy Regent.
