Coming off a 10-0, mercy rule loss to the Desert Vista Thunder Tuesday April 27, the Brophy Broncos baseball team was no-hit by the Thunder, losing 7-1 in the final game of the regular season.

The Broncos walked 10 times against Desert Vista pitchers Eric Brown and Shaun Chase but were unable to get a single hit.

Their best chance at a hit came late in the game when John Rapisarda ’12 lined a pitch into centerfield, but Thunder outfielder Jaycob Brugman made a diving catch to record the out.

In two games against the Thunder, Brophy got just five hits and one run.

“If this is our downturn then so be it,” said head coach Mr. Tom Succow.

The sole Brophy run of the night came in the bottom of the first when Joe Maggi ’11 was chased home on a sacrifice fly to left off the bat of Dave Graybill ’12.

Maggi led off the game with a walk then promptly stole second. Chris Beall ’12 grounded out the second base and Maggi advanced to third base where he was then driven in on the sac fly from Graybill.

Brophy failed to score another run despite putting 12 men on base. Brophy hitters grounded into three double plays throughout the course of the game.

Nick Jones ’11 went five and one-third innings, allowing five runs on 10 hits. He also struck out two and walked two. He was replaced by Mark Stern ’10 who went one and one-third innings, walking three and giving up two runs, only one of which was earned.

Mr. Succow said he couldn’t remember the last time the team had lost their last home game and said it was the first time in 930 games when the team he was coaching had been no-hit.

The Broncos begin the state tournament Saturday, May 1 and, as Mr. Succow told his players after the game, if the team should rattle off five consecutive victories, they will be state champs.

“Everybody goes into Saturday with 0-0 records … we just have to go out and play as hard as we can,” he said.
