Thanks to advanced security protocols and a vigilant community, many students at Brophy College Preparatory feel safe and secure, whilst, across the canal, Central High School, where according to Niche, 26% of students report that their school doesn’t feel safe.
Throughout Brophy’s history there have been no reports of any major safety concerns regarding the school both within and outside the community. There have been incidents in the past with the surrounding schools, but nothing emanating from Brophy.
There are a lot of factors that contribute to the safety of students in a school. In an interview with the Director of Security, Mr. Troy Bartlett, there were topics discussed following how they keep the students safe and secure.
Since Brophy is a private school, it does have full accountability over their students. In order to keep their students safe, they make sure the school is secured daily and any visitors are funneled into the only checkpoint in the school.
Though the school has three security guards, those guards total 92 years of law enforcement experience. With such a vast area to secure, Brophy keeps in contact with all the schools in the surrounding area: Central High School, Xavier, St. Francis Xavier, and with Phoenix Union’s director of safety and security.
When asked about the protocols to follow regarding any safety concerns Mr. Bartlett had no comment to make. But when asked what is Brophy to do when a surrounding school is under a critical incident, Mr. Bartlett responded, “We are notified by the school in question or by our law enforcement partners, then we will evaluate the situation from there.”
Asking Mr. Bartlett what sets Brophy and the surrounding schools apart, he stated, “We are a private institution and what sets us apart is our student engagement, our parental involvement, and our partnering with our community.”
The price is a very big factor in attending Brophy and asking Mr. Bartlett if finances has any contributing factors towards the safety, he responded “It comes down to personal choice and making those right decisions, but also having the community behind you and having something to strive for in life.”
The major difference between securities aren’t coming from the security themselves, but from the positive community that Brophy has. The positive and fulfilling community offers a lot of support and allows concerns to be spread throughout the community and when problems arise, they can assist when needed in a timely manner.
