OPINION: Parking ropes clog up traffic, limit accessibility to North lot

By Matthew Zacher ’18

THE ROUNDUP

Student drivers entering Brophy from 1st St. will discover a colorful string of flags waiting for them in front of the North Lot, formerly known as the auxiliary lot.

Many students coming from the east valley arrive at Brophy by way of 1st Street, and used to be able to pull into the lot from the North entrance, which eased the flow of traffic coming into Brophy’s main campus.

Every morning, a teacher is stationed at the lot’s entrance to ensure that all students have carpools, and the elimination of the other entrance allows the teacher to easily examine each vehicle as they enter.

Students who have not registered to receive a parking sticker and who do not have a carpool must park in either the Post Office Lot on 7th St. or park in the neighborhoods surrounding the school.

Director of Security Mr. John Buchanan puts up the rope every morning, and he said the rope is meant to manage the flow of students into the lot.

“The rope is meant to limit the entrance to the North lot so that we can better manage the influx of vehicles,” he said.

Despite the benefit of ensuring that all parkers are eligible, this rope must come down because of the traffic it creates as St. Francis Xavier and Brophy cars converge on 1st St.

This change may seem like a necessary step to ensure that parking spots are only taken by eligible drivers, but the fact is that the dozens of spots remain empty in the lot every morning.

This unnecessary step with the parking rope only serves to create more havoc at the intersection of Camelback Rd. and 1st St. and clogs up traffic nearing campus.

In order to avoid facing severe stress and tardy slips while arriving to school, students must arrive on campus at or before 7:50 A.M.

Last year, the North lot was always healthily filled and there wasn’t such a logjam on 1st St. If something isn’t broken, we shouldn’t try to fix it.

Mr. Higgins, tear down this rope.
