The ROUNDUP
What is your name and graduation year?
I’m Elysia Fleetwood and I graduate in the year 2020.
While at Xavier what was your favorite activity or club to partake in that was non-athletic?
I think my favorite part would probably be [being] a part of BSU and Unity and Diversity Club. It was just a lot of fun and you got to talk to a lot of people that you wouldn’t think you had [anything] in common with but it’s everyone celebrating differences with each other. That’s what makes it fun and unique.
What sports do you do at Xavier and what was one thing that sport helps you to achieve?
I [run] track and play basketball. I mainly did basketball. Basketball is my entire life and being coached by Jennifer Gillom is one of the greatest experiences I could ever have and I’m blessed to know that she’s my coach and she supports me. It changed me a lot to be a well all-around leader and to step up in places I needed to step up and it made me see myself as a character.
Why did you choose to attend Xavier ?
I chose to attend because of basketball. Most of my friends who I played basketball with came to this school and were telling me we’d be the school to get the championship and we had a bright future with each other. All I ever was to play with my girls again and knowing Coach Gillom was there made that dream even more possible.
Who’s your favorite teacher and why?
My favorite teacher as of now would probably be Ms. Welty because she has that energy I can match with and she’s goofy in class. She makes learning interesting, and when you meet her and talk to her it’s like she has that lively presence that [makes] you want to stay in the class. She’s a teacher I can actually talk to about my problems and turns the messiness into a joke that [we] could laugh about.
