Brophy Athletic logo head w_textAfter a three and three start to the season Brophy got back over .500 with solid performances from Sai Tummala’11 and James Harper’12 as the Broncos won 55-46 against Desert Mountain Jan. 8.

At the end of the first quarter, it was not looking good for Brophy as they found themselves trailing 17-9, despite four of the Broncos’ five starters scoring in the first eight minutes.

Brophy’s defense picked it up in the second quarter, keeping the Wolves to only six points while scoring 10 of their own. At halftime the score was 23 to 19 Desert Mountain.

However, the Wolves maintained their lead in the third quarter outscoring the Broncos 14-13. The scoreboard showed a 37-32 deficit for Brophy.

Then came the dynamic fourth quarter where the Broncos put on a show going on a game-winning 23-9 run. Harper was hot with his hand hitting three three-point shots as part of a total of 20 points.

Meanwhile Tummala out-rebounded both teams in the second half with eight grabs along with three blocks.

Coach Fuller is doing a great job teaching the team about rebounding,” Tummala said. “I box out like he says and I do my job. It is as simple as that.”

“I made the contributions I made in order to help my team win the game,” Harper said. “It was all a team effort though. We help each other out in games and practice. That is how we win.”

The Wolves had continuous problems with fouls. There were a total of 19 penalties charged on Desert Mountain; three were in the first, two in the second, six in the third and nine in the fourth.

The Broncos took advantage of those free throws making 18 out of 22 attempts.

“I am very proud of this group of guys coming into games and playing this tough,” said coach Mr. Tony Fuller. “They make a commitment to win every game. I am the same coach from last year, but it is the kids who have stepped up big to play in tough matchups and work hard to come out on top.”

“These boys learn their techniques from practice and perform those actions in games. I could not be any happier and prouder for us as a team.”

Next up, the Broncos travel to Mesa to take on the Jackrabbits.
