With six seconds to go and the game tied on Jan. 31, Tim Kempton ’13 was fouled as he drove toward the basket and missed the shot.

As the crowd went crazy, Kempton hit both of his free throw attempts and the Broncos defense stopped Highland to walk away with the two-point win, 65-63.

“I told them to switch everything, not foul and just block out,” said head coach Mr. Tony Fuller.

Kempton lead the team with 28 points and eight rebounds while making all his shots from the free throw line.

Max Kufel ’15 added 17 points and six rebounds.

The first half was close as it was tied at the end of the first quarter and was 33-31 Brophy at halftime.

“In the first half we came out flat on the defensive end,” Kempton said. “Coach gave us a good halftime talk and the team got amped up and ready to play.”.

They changed their defense up a bit focusing on Highland’s forward, who was having success.

“I think it kind of knocked him off his rhythm a little bit,” Mr. Fuller said. “He had 30 points, but only scored two in the fourth quarter and that was the difference.”

Both teams traded shots and the lead was never more than a few baskets for either team.

Mr. Fuller said with the team heading into the playoffs momentum from this game was a big factor.

“We’ve got some guys sick right now,” Fuller said. “If we get everybody back playing well and focused, I think we can hopefully make a run.”

The Broncos have to look forward now as they are headed to the playoffs after beating Goldwater on Feb. 1.

“It just came down to the will to win,” Kempton said.
