THE ROUNDUP
The Brophy lacrosse team won the 5A-I state championship Friday, May 14, 10-8 against Chandler to bring home their third championship in four seasons, including back-to-back championships in 2007-2008.
Brock Ghelfi ’12 scored four goals and assisted on another, according to westsidelax.com. Adam Fishman ’10 also helped lead the team with two goals and three assists.
Brophy trailed 3-2 at the end of the first quarter then took a 6-4 halftime lead. They expanded their lead to 9-6 at the end of the third and tacked on their 10th goal in the final quarter.
The team, which lost senior Robby Mayasich ’10 early in the season when he died several days after being struck by a car while running a relay race, went 18-2 in the regular season.
“Losing Robby a week before the season was slated to start was a big blow to the team,” said Mack Regan ’12 in an e-mail. “The team immediately agreed to dedicate the season to Robby. Our team’s game undershirts read ‘We Are One’ with a big pink 8, Robby’s number and favorite color of course. And guess what, we did it. We won it for Robby.”
Regan said that the team isn’t going to start thinking about next year’s championship, that they will “play next season like we did this season, taking one game at a time.”
