Garrett Larsen: More Than the Finish Line

By Miguel Esparza ’28

Lego-building, Counter-Strike and Thomas Aquinas aren’t necessarily the first things that come to mind when thinking of Garrett Larsen ‘27.

A senior at Brophy and one of the state’s fastest sprinters, Larsen spends much of his time away from the track doing things simply because he enjoys them. He plays video games, hangs out with friends and builds LEGO Architecture sets. His current project is Notre Dame Cathedral.

“I like staying busy, and everything I do doesn’t have to be beneficial to me,” Larsen said. “Just doing things that I find fun.”

That same curiosity shows up in his interest in philosophy and theology. Larsen studies Thomas Aquinas and early Church Fathers such as Polycarp and Ignatius of Antioch.

His childhood in New Mexico also shaped him. Larsen lived with his grandparents and grew up around horses, goats and even a duck. Some of his best memories come from riding horses, and he hopes to return to an equestrian life one day.

Now, as he prepares to leave Brophy, Larsen said he will remember the people he met along the way.

“There’s so many people that I’ve learned from that have had an impact on me that, after I graduate, I’m probably never gonna see them again,” Larsen said. “And I think there’s a beauty to that, that I’ll always cherish every memory that I’ve had with people.”

For Larsen, Brophy is more than a collection of accomplishments. It’s the people and experiences that shaped him.
