Matt Nelson ’12 started rowing for the Brophy crew team only two years ago, but in that time he has blossomed into one of the top rowers on the squad and his love for the sport continues to grow.
“I really enjoy going to practice and getting away from all the stress of college applications and homework,” Nelson said. “When I am out on Tempe Town Lake, I am completely relaxed and think about nothing but my technique.”
Since its early years, Brophy players and coaches alike have taken pride in their sports department.
In fact, athletics play such a large role in the community that many consider them synonymous with Brophy.

They walk away from practice with aching bodies and calloused hands, but it’s a small price to pay for the experience that is crew.
Those on the crew team spend their time rowing across lakes in the fastest time possible.
Rowers said a crucial part of the experience of crew if the kinship that members feel.
“Crew is a sport that really promotes unity over individual achievement. The team comes first,” said Jackson Bentley ’13.
Boat and oars? Check.
Talented and conditioned team members? Check.
Water to row in? Now the Brophy crew team has a problem.
On July 20, Tempe Town Lake drained as part of the dam holding the water in place deflated, leaving all water goers with an unexpected dilemma.
